Doireann Brennan interviews a sex worker about her life
“If I get chatting to someone at the bus stop and they ask what I do for a living, I can’t be like ah I’m just a hooker”
Cara is an intelligent and very independent 22-year-old college graduate. Confident and strong willed she's tall and very fit spending three or four days a week in the gym. Confidence and her strong willing nature has led her to be very proud of herself. She spends her time in luxurious places with fancy men, dining in the best restaurants and travelling around the world. She only works two nights a week, however her parents, whom she lives with, have no idea what she does for those two nights.
Sex work has been Cara's line of business for the past eleven months. It started with her selling nude pictures online. The people who were buying her content asked her would she consider meeting up with them in exchange for money. She has taken this as a business opportunity and sets her own pay rates. Cara has built up a substantial client base with most of her advertising done on Tumblr where she has thousands of followers.
She commends herself on how she doesn’t just provide sex, she also provides companionship. She loves how she can work at her own pace deciding when she wants to work and when it’s time for a day off, “It wasn’t like I woke up one day and thought I want to be a sex worker”.
She is articulate and can express herself without any uncertainty. Cara is very open about her job as she wants to de-stigmatise sex work.
Cara hopes there will be a time in the future when telling people she is a sex worker wont lead to shocked faces and that there will be less shame attached to sex work and sex workers.
