FROM HEARING HER VOICE on the radio, to gracing our television screens as the co-host of RTE’S Podge & Rodge Show, Doireann has made her mark in Ireland as a hilarious, beautiful and intelligent superstar.
Starting off her career, a young Doireann pictured herself as the next big actress to come out of Ireland but the harsh world of acting set her back.
‘It was constant rejection and I figured I just had too much energy to sit around between castings.’ It was her plan B that set Doireann on a path she never expected. Her sister Aoibhin suggested she try Today FM’s school of radio. It was here that her radio career took off.
“I ended up loving it and it gave me a great understanding of radio.” She has built up a pretty impressive radio career, starting off reading traffic for AA Roadwatch, moving on to Spin 1038 to work as an entertainment reporter and finally on to her big break with Martin Guilfoyle presenting The Zoo Crew.
In the midst of her radio career, her social media profile blew up when she started her infamous impressions. It was a time when Snapchat was at its peak and everyone and their mother had seen Doireanns impressions. They went viral.
Doireanns genuine personality is what makes her so likeable. Her impressions included the biggest Irish celebrities such as Suzanne Jackson, Roz Purcell and Pippa O’Connor. She gained a whopping 30,000 followers overnight.
Of course trolls come hand in hand with social media and that’s something Doireann has had to deal with but feels lucky knowing she’s true to herself and isn’t losing sleep over the haters. Doireann points out that the trolls come with the territory. “The negative side is that a web of lies can escalate so quickly but remember it’ll be old news by tomorrow.’ Doireanns latest venture is in to the world of television where she has her own TV series called, ‘The Doireann Project’ where she compiles her hilarious impressions and acts them out in mini skits. The pilot which aired on the RTÉ player was a huge success and the new series is expected to begin at the end of this month.
Just recently, she began to co-host The Podge and Rodge show. She explains how the show is much different than the original version. ‘They’ve had to change the way they are, the stuff they would’ve got away with, it’s different now. People are more easily offended.’ She laughed. She admits it’s a lovely way to be introduced to the TV industry. Doireann admits that TV is very different to recording her impressions. ‘With the impressions, I can do a million takes if I need to.’
Reflecting on her career, Doireann points out how she has done a full circle back to where she originally wanted to be, presenting the Podge & Rodge show and doing her impressions for her own RTE show. ‘It didn’t hit me until I was filming it back in May, that this is exactly what I wanted to do when I started.’
People ask Doireann regularly where she gets her love of acting and it all makes sense as both her grandfathers had a musical ear, with one being a storyteller and the other, a musician. It’s clear that talent runs through her family from both sides. From watching her Instagram stories where her mam and dad feature quite regularly, they come across as characters in their own right. Doireann has a strong connection with the West of Ireland where both her parents are from. ‘Any free time we have, we try to spend it over there. The West has my heart.'
When asked what makes her heart beat the fastest, Doireanns very quick to say it’s her impressions. It’s where it all took off for Doireann and she proclaims that they are her ‘precious babies’. She finally got to put her love of acting to the test. It’s clear that it makes it all worthwhile for Doireann when she puts her content online and sees such a positive reaction. It’s this reaction that gives her the fire in her belly and reminds her that she’s living her dream.
